The Golden Compass director to do Twilight?

It was reported yesterday that Twilight director, Catherine Hardwicke won't be coming back to do the Twilight sequel, New Moon, due to a timing issue.

Now reports are surfacing that Chris Weitz, who has directed The Golden Compass, About a Boy, and American Pie, to name a few) has been offered the job.

Weitz is supposedly still considering the offer to direct New Moon, and possibly Eclipse (the third installment of the Twilight saga).
